Exciting news is emerging for Estepona as the town is gearing up to host a massive commercial centre, which would surpass Marbella’s iconic La Cañada shopping mall and become one of the biggest in Spain. This project, which has been in the pipeline for over a decade, is now back in the spotlight and promises to be a game changer for the region.
Originally announced in 2008 by former mayor Antonio Barrientos, the ambitious €300 million development was designed to cover a vast area of 130,000 square metres in La Lobilla, Estepona. Unfortunately, the plans were put on hold due to the financial crisis that hit Spain, halting many large-scale construction projects.
Fast forward to today, and the project is back on track, with the Junta de Andalucia’s Department of Environmental Sustainability currently reviewing the plans. If approved, Estepona’s new shopping centre will not only compete with Marbella’s La Cañada but will also help reduce pressure on existing retail hubs like Puerto Banus and the shopping centres in the Campo de Gibraltar.
According to the latest reports, the proposed centre will feature 117,814 square metres of retail space, with the entire site spanning over 130,000 square metres. This will include public green areas and other facilities, making it a modern commercial development that could become a key attraction on the western Costa del Sol.
The location is ideal, bordered by the A-7 motorway to the south and southeast, providing excellent accessibility for both locals and tourists alike. With large-scale developers like Costasol de Hipermercados SL and Azata SA involved, this shopping centre could set a new standard for retail and leisure in the region.
While no construction date has been confirmed yet, the approval process is underway, and Estepona could soon be home to one of the largest and most impressive shopping destinations in Spain.
Why This Matters for Real Estate in Costa del Sol
The development of such a large shopping centre in Estepona is expected to have a significant impact on property values in the surrounding area. With increased infrastructure, better amenities, and more attractions, demand for homes near this prime location is likely to rise. Estepona has already seen a surge in popularity in recent years, and this project could further position it as one of the most desirable areas to invest in along the Costa del Sol.
